Munchin' in München

Don’t waste your time asking me how the beer is here in Germany. Yeah, I get it, it’s kind of a big deal here. And, yes, I’m drinking a lot of it. But between my unrefined taste and my deep-seated fear of pronouncing the German beer names incorrectly, my opinion on the matter is unimportant.

What Ive really been enjoying is another drink, which I’ve found in several places: banana juice (or- in German- "Bananensaft”).

I first discovered it at an Italian restaurant. Then at a Greek restaurant. Then at another Italian restaurant. Then at a fruit juice stand in the market at Marienplatz. It’s just a smoothie, nothing too special. But it seems to be very prevalent amongst menus here. It’s probably the one drink I will genuinely miss ordering at restaurants when I come home.

I have enjoyed more traditional treats, too. Yesterday, we stopped at a gelato place. I got “Bueno” flavored gelato, which is based on a german chocolate bar called a Bueno Bar. It contains wafers, hazelnut and chocolate. So. good.

While I’m on the subject of food, there is a confession I need to make. In the four days that we’ve been in Munich, I’ve eaten American fast food not once, not twice, but three times. The menus are not identical to the franchises in America, though. For example, at Mcdonalds, they have something called “Los Beefos”. In this case, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Believe it or not, I actually did not order the Los Beefos.
